[dropcap style=”dropcap3″]S[/dropcap]cientifically, the function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body through the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. Because of the importance of heart in the body of human beings, once it stops functioning, it’s bye to existence.
In the same vein, heart occupies a special place in the relationship of God with a man. As far God is concerned, the heart determines your Character, in terms of being good or bad. That is why we are directed to “ keep your heart with due diligence. For out it is issues of life( proverb 4: 23).” Jesus further emphasized the need to keep heart clean when he said: “ For out of the heart comes evil thoughts- murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony slander (Matthew 15: 19).” Because Adam’s generation refused to positively use the heart, God destroyed the earth. “ The Lord saw how great the wickedness of human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of human HEART WAS ONLY EVIL( emphasis mine) all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on earth and his heart was greatly troubled. So the Lord said I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created( Genesis 6: 5-6).” It’s therefore obvious that to be able to do the will of God on earth, we must detoxicate our heart to be occupied by positive thoughts.
It’s however unfortunate that the generality of our heart is is full with envy, greed, murder, theft, witchcraft etc. With this kind of heart, it’s impossible to please God and attract his blessings. How do we keep the heart with due diligence. They are plenty, but let’s dwell on 4 tips.
1 The word of God should dwell in us to keep away evil thoughts. “ The word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our our innermost thoughts and desires( Hebrew 4:12).”
2 Obedience to the word of God. To be able to free your heart from evil thoughts and do the will of God, you don’t just sit down and listen to the word of God. You most do what it’s says. “ Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Any one who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets how he looks like.( James 1: 22-24).”
3 Holy Spirit. It’s practically impossible to do the work of God and free your heart from evil thoughts, if the spirit of the Lord doesn’t dwell in you. Jesus stressed the importance of the Holy Spirit when he said “ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on…( Acts 1:8).” The disciples received the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus. “ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the spirit enabled them( Acts 2:4).” Holy Spirit aptly described as a helper ( John 14: 26) As an advocate ( john 15:26). As a comforter ( John 16:7). With the Holy Spirit, you are assured of a trouble free heart, a heart full of positive thoughts.
4 prayer full life will constantly keep the heart in check from demonic forces. Jesus charged the disciples about prayers thus “ Be always on the watch and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen and that you may be able to stand before the son of man.” Pray without ceasing( 1 Thessalonians 5:17).”
Conclusively, to please God and live in peace and harmony and make a success of life, the heart, the engine room of the relationship of God with a man, we must positively keep the heart free from evil thoughts and we can only do that if the word of God dwells in us. We also not only read the word of God but, but must be obedient to its injunctions.
Similarly, we should make our heart a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit and constantly invite God to our heart through prayers and supplication.
When we do all these, it shall be well with us. It shall be well with our families. It shall also be well with our locality and it shall well with our nation.
